The Unexpected Place Executive Communication Coaching Shows Up

I had a conversation with a client recently that stopped me in my tracks.

We'd been working together for a couple of months on how he shows up in high-stakes professional settings. Board meetings. Difficult conversations with senior stakeholders. The moments where he needed to speak with clarity and authority rather than letting things slide.

And it was working. He was noticing real shifts at work.

But then he said something I wasn't expecting.

"It's changed how I am at home."

He talked about being able to listen - really listen - to his family without immediately problem-solving or deflecting. About being able to say no to things without over-explaining or apologising. About having difficult conversations with his partner that he'd been avoiding for years, and finally being able to have them without it turning into a row.

He hadn't come to me for any of that. But it came anyway.

And the more I sit with this, the more I think it makes complete sense.

Because the skills that make you a more powerful communicator in a boardroom are the same skills that make you a more present, connected human being everywhere else.

Learning to listen without immediately formulating your response. Learning to sit with silence rather than rushing to fill it. Learning to say what you actually mean rather than the version of it that feels safe. Learning to hold your ground without shutting the other person out.

These aren't professional skills. They're human skills. We just tend to only invest in them when there's a business case for doing so.

What I've come to believe - and what my clients keep showing me - is that when you do this work properly, it doesn't stay in the boardroom. It comes home with you. It shows up in how you parent. How you partner. How you move through the world.

The work is about communication. But what it's really about is connection.

And that, it turns out, is something all of us need - not just in the meeting room, but everywhere.
